Missing issues of the Iowa State Daily

While this is by no means complete, it is a general start to the missing issues of the Iowa State Daily through various places that the publication is available.

MICROFILM: The microfilm guide is for the archive that is available at Parks Library and spans the Daily‘s entire history, from the first issue to its last print edition in March 2020. I’ve gone through the archive pretty thoroughly through ~1921, so I can speak to what issues are fully missing. I’ve hunted and pecked through various eras since, but not as rigorously. I know there is no microfilm for summer 1977. (Note: This doesn’t include issues editions that are in poor or damaged condition. Indeed, some issues are in horrible condition and some are have parts of pages that are unreadable. Some issues also have missing pages, but such things aren’t listed here.)

Sidenote: I find it quite impressive that the first 12 years (364 issues) of the Daily exist relatively intact. In my notes, I have 1 page marked as missing (page one of 20 Feb 1900) and 6 pages marked as difficult to read/unreadable.

ISSUU: The guide to Issuu notes what issues can’t be found on that platform, which includes a vast majority of the past decade. The issues on Issuu can also be found on Park Library’s digital repository, which covers summer 2010 through fall 2019. The missing issues should be located in the library’s microfilm archive, but they will be in black and white. (All stories can be found online.) This list of the missing is only for the main edition of the newspaper, not special sections that are possible missing.

With the older missing microfilm issues, please check your attics and basements.

Notes: The newspapers from fall 1898 through fall 1900 can be found on both microfilm reels 2 and 3A. The 25 Oct 1898 issue can only be found on reel 3A, which is generally a better quality reel.

The newspapers from 1910 through spring 1911 can be found on both reels 4 and 5. Reel 4 contains 9 issues that aren’t on reel 5.
