A member of the Missouri Valley Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MVIAA), Iowa State won its first conference title in football in fall 1911. It was a shared title because it was a tie with University of Nebraska-Lincoln (but Iowa State won more games). Drake University had been a favorite to win the conference title, and the Des Moines Register made more than a few mentions of it. So when Drake just misses the mark, I.S.C. Student illustrator Arch Crawford has some fun by making the Register a part of the meal – Thanksgiving was a few days ago – being served to the conference champions.
1911 MVIAA Football: 1st (tie): Iowa State (6-1-1) and Nebraska (5-1-2); 2nd: Drake (5-2-1) … yes, ties were an accepted outcome.
